Commemorating International Holocaust Memorial Day at ADL
A poignant tradition associated with this day involves placing candles in windows, casting a gentle glow that symbolizes hope in the face of overwhelming darkness.
At ADL, I was entrusted with the significant task of creating a piece to commemorate this day. The vision? A short video, both evocative and respectful. The heart of the visual was a solitary candle, its flame flickering and eventually being extinguished. Using After Effects, I infused the scene with the distant, innocent laughter of children — a haunting reminder of the countless lives snuffed out during the Holocaust. Overlaying the scene were subtle bokeh effects, encapsulating the spirits and dreams that were mercilessly extinguished.
The core message was a powerful yet simple one: By lighting a candle, we not only honor the souls that were lost but ensure that their memories burn bright in our collective consciousness.
Despite the constraints of time — with merely 30 minutes dedicated to production — the result was a moving tribute that resonated deeply with viewers. The feedback, both internal and external, was overwhelmingly positive, a testament to the idea that even in brevity, we can capture profound emotions and messages.
